TAKHT-E-SOLEYMAN

It is located 350 kilometers south of Tabriz. The city is powerfully fortified with a wall of brick and stone reinforced with bastions, and a circular plan. It was built in two phases, in the fourth and sixth centuries AD, a hundred years before its occupation by the Byzantine emperor Heraclius. The southern door is still intact, with arch and niches. At the center of the city there is a little lagoon, still fed by a resurgence, from which two small rivers leave the two main urban gates. Overlooking the lagoon is the temple of fire which has four-meter thick walls. The temple was connected to a room where the sacred fire burned.
There were also other rooms, with more sacred areas and hypostyle halls, which had to have a cult role:
some of them, restored in the Islamic era, remained in use as living quarters until the 12th century.
Two kilometers from the city rises a volcano whose profile dominates the landscape and almost hangs over Takht-e-Soleyman. The volcano, inactive since time immemorial, near the mouth of the crater, the remains of numerous Zoroasterian tombs are still visible. The volcano was considered the seat of Ahur Goshnasp, god of war, and here the king had to go at least once after his investiture.
